WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATEBenefits for participating NANI Publications include: - National classified revenues that would likely never be earned elsewhere.
HOW IT WORKS1. Advertisers place orders for the NANI program through participating AFCP members. 2. Participating members submit ad orders and payment to AFCP. 3. AFCP processes the orders by combining all the NANI ads to be published in that week. 4. Member publications receive a list of NANI ads to be published by email, fax or can be downloaded in the NANI Ad Lists section. 5. Participating members publish the list of ads in their publications during the three-week publishing window. 6. AFCP sends a request for tearsheets every half year, which is used to audit publication. 7. Publishers who submit tearsheets and have run the ads correctly will be entered into a rebate pool. Rebates are distributed based on audited circulation. 8. Checks are issued to each participating member based on their audited circulation, the number of ads they published, and how long they have participated in the network. 9. Publications must send circulation audit statements every two years. The audit must be performed by a circulation audit firm approved by the NANI board of directors. Members are not eligible to earn rebates until a valid circulation audit has been completed and submitted to NANI headquarters. Rebates are distributed semi-annually to participating publications based upon passing the NANI audit. These rebate checks range from $30 to $45 per thousand circulation per half-year. For publications with substantial circulation, this can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars per year. Publications with lower circulation find that the ability to bring staff (at no charge) to the best training and best conference each year is worth many thousands of dollars. NANI offers 2 different programs. When you participate in NANI, you are required to participate in the basic NANI Ad Network, but participation in the Government Ad Network is entirely voluntary.

Members interested in running government ads must call or email AFCP to join the Government NANI Network. Participation is voluntary and can be ended at any time. Simply contact the AFCP office. REBATE CALCULATIONSNANI rebates about 70% to 80% of the revenue it earns. The remaining percentage is used to fund other member benefits, principally AFCP's annual conference, The Leadership Institute and administrative expenses. Checks are issued to each participating member based on their audited circulation, the number of ads they published, and how long they have participated in the network, the level of revenue in the NANI program and the total circulation of all members included in the audit. This is a lengthy calculation that is detailed below. However, publishers can estimate their revenue by simply multiplying $60 per thousand circulation. If all ads are published, this is very close to the level of revenue earned annually in the NANI program. See example The NANI program was started more than 25 years ago to help fund the Association of Free Community Papers. By allowing the association to sell a few ads and each publisher agreeing to run the ads free-of-charge, the association was able to maintain very low dues and provide exceptional member benefits. This operating procedure continued for many years and was successful. In fact, it was more than successful. The association reached a point where its funding was sufficient and more advertising revenue was being received than necessary. The NANI board started to rebate excess revenues to participating member publications to offset some or all of their costs associated with running the ads. The network continued to grow and provide exceptional advertising results for advertisers. Seeing an opportunity to add profit to member publications, the NANI board continued to press for sales increases while greatly increasing the rebate checks to participating members. Clearly members are receiving member benefits and rebates that far outdistance participation costs. Over the past ten years, circulation of the network has grown from 10 million to over 30 million, now reaching more than one of every four homes in the United States. Revenue has grown from $600,000 to nearly $4 million. Ad count has increased from five to six ads per week to more than 40 due to the exceptional advertising results NANI provides to advertisers.
